Blue points out that, just as in the voice theater, on stage all signs are done larger than life, and with a particular theatrical flourish. "They have to be richer, but more crisp," he says. "The signs have to reach the last person in the house; but they can't be too loud for the person sitting in the front row." Blue speaks from ex- perience. "Sign is my first language," the Boston native explains. Sign was the language he used to learn the Torah — in Hebrew — for his bar mitzvah. Blue's work on the stage extends beyond ac- ting. He's written plays and has directed for the NTD and other groups. "He has a good sure hand," says Susan Reeves of the NTD and has seen his work. For theater goers — of whatever stripe — seeing an NTD play for the first time can be quite an experience. "When I was in my junior year in college I saw the Na- tional Theatre for the Deaf at the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center in Waterford, Conn.," recalls Tilchin. "I went out of my mind," says the West Bloomfield native. "I went to Hillel and my parents Asher and Jeanette Tilchin still live in the area," she says. Tilchin, who has worked with the comedy/improvisa- tion group, Gross National Product, and in children's theater is one of two hearing actors in the company. Although she knew some sign language before she joined the troupe she was hired because of her acting abilities, she explained. "It combines all kinds of theater in one voice, movement and creativity?' To Blue, the theater has reached people in very special ways. "In this production peo- ple continue to come up and say, 'That's theater.'
