Washington (JTA) - A
former president of the
American Jewish Congress
predicted that "one way or
another there is going to be a
Palestinian state."
Rabbi Arthur Hertzberg,
now a vice president of the
World Jewish Congress,
delivered those comments at
the second annual meeting in
Washington of the U.S. Inter-
religious Committee for Peace
in the Middle East. The
group, founded last January,
has Christians, Jews and
Moslems on its board.
The group supports Israel's
security "including the op-
tion of an independent state
in the West Bank and Gaza
pledged to live in peace with
Israel."
Hertzberg said the U.S.
dialogue with the Palestine
Liberation Organization

THE JEWISH NEWS

The U.S. Jewish communi-
ty recognizes that the PLO is
a "fact of life," and agrees
with Israel Defense Force
Chief of Staff Dan Shomron's
recent statement that "the in-
tifada does not lend itself to
anything other than a
political solution," he
maintained.
