LCOHOL RUGS:. USE and MISUSE The school will be housed in what is now room 333 of the Maple/Drake Jewish Center. It will have four classrooms, multi-purpose room, offices and bathrooms. The entrance to the school will be at the rear of the Center, and children will be met daily by the teachers and teachers' aides and taken to their classrooms. In cooperation with Hillel 'Day School, Yavneh has made arrangements for children to have bus transportation from the Jimmy Prentis Morris Jewish Center. Yavneh students living in the Walled Lake School District will be able to use that district's bus service to the school. The school will help arrange car- pools in Farmington Hills and West Bloomfield. A minimum of 10 students is needed to open each grade, Eichner said. Each year a new grade will be added up to the eighth grade. No services will be will be available for children with special needs, Students can be bused from the Morris JCC. but they may be bused to the Walled Lake schools for those services if the parents wish. "For those things we can't provide, we'll find alternative resources," Jonas said. The Yavneh curriculum will be an individualized developmental program in which children can learn at their own pace and "in a style comfortable for that child," Eichner explained. It will take a hands-on approach, and Jewish life, values, ritual and practice will be incor- porated. Students also will participate in a variety of enrichment activities, in- cluding sports, arts and crafts, computers, drama and cooking. All children will be tested for readiness prior to their acceptance into the school. Careful consideration is be- ing paid to the hiring of teachers, Eichner said. "We are committed to having state-certified teachers and teaching assistants. Teachers are the key to success of the school. "We are developing the best school," Eichner said. "It is the dream of every educator to put together a school like this — state of the art." To Jonas, the school has to be attractive to both parents and kids. "We want to provide a quality secular education and the Judaica to go with it. It has to be a fun, warm place to go to school." ❑ A JEWISH CONCERN Location: Congregation Shaarey Zedek 27375 Bell Road Southfield, Michigan FREE ADMISSION This Wednesday, 7:30 p.m. INTERVENTION: A Way To Enable The Chemically Dependent Person To Accept Help Speaker: Film: 7:30 p.m. Renee Gerger, MSW, Intervention Specialist Henry Ford Hospital Chemical Dependency Treatment Programs "The Intervention" A Recovering Family March 29 OUR JEWISH COMMUNITY'S RESPONSE — Wednesday What Can We Do?
