prefer to keep their activities quiet. Graduate student Basil Kiwan, treasurer of the Ann Arbor-affiliate of the American-Arab Anti- Discrimination Committee, is a member of Salaam-Shalom. Although members of the group are interested in dialogue, Jewish and Arab participants often seem to be speaking a different language. Kiwan recounts an incident when Salaam- Shalom discussed the phrase "Nothing can ever justify the establishment of Israel at the expense of the Palestinians." The Arab students heard the entire phrase, Kiwan says. The Jews heard only "Nothing can ever justify the -establishment of Israel." Kiwan believes many Jewish students are in- terested in dialogue, but are hindered by others who label them "self-hating Jews." or now, at least, the most visible members of the Arab and Jewish student communities in Ann Arbor are also the most outspoken. And as one throws barbs, the other becomes more rigid. Each proffers a gallery of nameless- but dedicated sup- porters. Arab students repeatedly say "many, many Jews we know do not believe the Daily editorials were anti- Semitic and know Israeli policies are racist?' Jewish students say, "A lot of people are behind us, many aren't even Jewish." Meanwhile, Arab and Jewish students stand their ground. Generals in a battle of wills, they say dialogue is a low priority. There is an exception. Sitting in his cluttered apartment, Brad Kurtzberg sets his armaments aside. "You know," he says, "I real- ly wish I could talk to Hilary (Shadroui) and Dina (Khoury)." ❑ Nazi Education Is Topic Of Talk The B'nai B'rith Hillel Foundation's annual Con- ference on the Holocaust will include a talk by Alfons Heck on the role of Nazism in the education of German youth during the years of the Third Reich, 7:30 p.m. March 26, at Hillel, 1429 Hill, Ann Arbor.
