I have no intention to create
the impression as if all we do
is perfect. On the contrary, we
Israelis are human beings, no
better and no worse than
1 others, and as such we are
also responsible for mistakes
and for acts of foolishness.

Prof. Leibovitz, who is one
of Israel's senior philosophers,
was asked what was the
significance of "in-
dependence" for him, an
Israeli. His repy was short:
"It is the right to commit our
own mistakes, and to pay the
price."
I do believe that the free
press in Israel is the main in-
strument which is helping all
of us — government, military,
and public at large — to see,
read and understand these
mistakes of our own. In spite
of some resentment we may
have against the media, we
are first and foremost
thankful for its vital work.

Gazit's Detroit
