The campers share, to some degree, one or more of the following characteristics: lack of self confidence, fear of new situations, or difficulties in following adult instructions or expectations, accepting responsibility for their behavior, getting along with peers and functioning in a group. Many of these campers are in special education classes in school. Silverman Village accepts 35 boys and girls to each of its two 25-day sessions. The staff is drawn from students in special education or related fields. Activities are geared to a camper's ability to be suc- cessful. These include horseback riding, swimming, boating, arts and crafts, nature appreciation, sports and camping trips. A learning center offers computers, film strips, cook- ing activities and newspaper writing to encourage the use of language, reading, math and problem-solving skills. The first session, intended for boys and girls age 10-12 takes palce June 22-July 16. The second session, for boys and girls age 6-10, takes place July 20-Aug. 13. Dr. Barbara Vedder, a special education consultant with Wayne Coun- ty Intermediate School District, has directed the pro- gram since 1976. An awards ceremony is held each week at which time all campers receive awards from staff for effort as well as for accomplishment. Scholarships are available.
