It's more mental and hopefully keeping some toneness." Ockerman was not physic- ally able to work out during her first pregnancy. She work- ed out during her second pregnancy, which "was more or less a breeze, comparative- ly speaking . . "I don't necessarily think (exercise) helps the labor any. I do think though, because of your strength that you've developed and your body con- trol that you develop through exercise and muscle control, you're much more in control during labor, as far as being able to breathe properly and being able to relax . . . I came back to teaching six weeks to the day after I had my baby!" Ockerman notes that most women who work out want to keep some degree of condi- tioning during pregnancy. "Most of them want to stay in shape and don't want to gain a lot of weight?' Like Perna, Ockerman says pregnant women get an emo- tional boost by working out. "The more pregnant you are the more awful you feel as far as looking at yourself in the mirror. And knowing that you're staying within your weight range or your physi- cian's weight range is definitely going to make you feel better and that's more important than what anyone else feels!" Spisak says women who work out during pregnancy "return to shape, quicker after (the birth). It's a real mental thing, too. You really feel better. It increases the concentration. You're not go- ing to gain any physical fitness . . . but you're going to keep it up. If you're going to do it before (pregnancy) you don't have to stop; you can keep exercising. It's probably not a great time to start. If you've never excercised in your life you shouldn't go in- to a pre-natal program!" For women who want to begin exercising during pregnancy, "We have some beginning classes or water classes," says Ockerman, "that I would suggest them to be in if they were bent on it and their doctors gave them the O.K." At the Jewish Center, the post-natal classeS are for babies as well as mothers. The mothers do 15 minutes of work on their own, with the babies sitting on the sideline. Moms and babies then do ex- ercises together, sing songs and again conclude with a discussion. Women usually join three to four weeks after giving birth and can remain until their babies begin to crawl. The newer moms and babies do a lighter workout. Ockerman recommends water classes for many of her post-natal clients. She says that most women who work out during pregnancy return post-partum. "Lots of them are back right away. As soon as their doctors give them the O.K. they're back in class again!' Their post-natal fitness motivations, says Ockerman, are similar to the pre-natal motivations: "For your own self and well-being. It makes you feel better as a person to get rid of those big clothes!' ❑ I ROUND UP I Honey Berris - Season Ends The Wolverines captured the Honey Berris Basketball League regular-season title with a 69-57 win over fourth- place What's Up Doc on Feb. 22 at the Maple/Drake Jewish Community Center.
