They all pitched in and helped with farming." In Tel Aviv, he observed Shabbat at a Sephardic synagogue. Masada was the group's next destination. "I heard about it, but it was unbelievable that 900 people could live on top of a moun- tain," he said. The following day, Silvers- tein floated in the Dead Sea, covering his body with the mineral-filled mud, and he swam in Ein Gedi's mineral waters. The trip was concluded with a tour of Yad Vashem. "When you walk in the children's memorial, you see pictures of happy faces," he noted. "Then you walk into a darker side of it and see stars representing the 1,500,000 children who were killed, and there's a voice that continuously reads off the names." Silverstein learned that the two most important things to Israelis are "children and land." "If anything ever hap- pened to the youth groups that go to Israel, it would- deter tourism to the greatest extent," he said. "So, they (Israelis) are going to take every effort to make sure nothing happens to the tourists or the children who visit Israel." When the week was over, Silverstein did not want to leave. "They took us that week to places that the American media describes as `troubled' areas, he said. "I saw nothing negative. "I am not a devout Zionist," said Silverstein. "I am Jewish. I have feelings for Israel, and I care about what happens to Israel. America is my country, but I would love to go back for another trip and stay there for three to six months." Silverstein is also convinc- ed that his children would not be in any danger in visiting the country. "I wouldn't hesitate in sending my children," said Silverstein. "I grew up and worked in Detroit for the past 20 years. All of the time we hear about kids getting shot in Detroit. How often do kids get shot in Israel — where there's a war? It is safer to walk down the street in Israel than it is to walk down the street in Detroit." Israel illicited a sense of pride in Silverstein. "I felt the same way when I went to see Washington, D.C.," he said. "You study American history all through your school years and all of a sudden all of it comes to life. And the same thing about Israel. You learn about Israel; it is your heritage, and you go there, and it comes to life." "The most enjoyable thing I've done this year was going to Israel," said Silverstein. "You don't send your loved ones away to an unsafe place. I know my children will enjoy it and hopefully feel that same sense of pride."- ❑ Teachers Volunteer New York — TOVS (Teachers on Volunteer Ser- vice), an organization based in New York City, in associa- tion with the department of education and culture of the WZO, the Israeli Ministry of Education and ORT, Israel now has openings for volunteer teachers to tutor English for the summer of 1989. A number of assignments are presently available in Jerusalem. Teachers working in this city have an opportuni- ty to imbibe the religious, historical and cultural tradi- tion which has made the con- cept of Jerusalem central to Judaism.. Openings also exist in Ashkelon. Here, teachers will be afforded the opportunity to participate in a new experi- ment which started in the summer of 1988, and, at the same time, enjoy the pleasures of seaside resort liv- ing in this lovely town on the Mediterranean coast. For information, write to Ms. Edna D. Gordon, director of TOVS, department of education and culture, WZO, 515 Park Avenue, New York, N.Y. 10022.
