Pogrebin's idea that women-
haters are also Jew-haters
does not square with Lewis'
notion that religious fun-
damentalists, Jewish or
otherwise, are ipso facto anti-
women. Blending the two
writers' ideas, fundamen-
talists' who hate women
would also have to hate their
own religion — a most in-
teresting idea.

"The smaller we get, the
stronger we get," says Norma
Granet, a Belfast Jew inter-
viewed in an article about the
Jews of Northern Ireland in
the B'nai B'rith Interna-
tional's Jewish Monthly.
The Belfast Jewish com-
munity is certainly getting
smaller: Never numbering
more than 1,500, it now totals
less than 300. But while
2,600 people have been killed
and more than 20,000 wound-
ed in the 20-year war between
Catholics and Protestants in
northern Ireland, not one Jew
is among these casualties.
The Irish Jews cited in
Mark Lieberman's article say
that anti-Semitism does not
exist in northern Ireland.
"People in Northern Ireland
are just too basically decent
for that sort of thing," said
one Irish Jew.
The Jewish community has
declared a sort of neutrality
in the bloody war between the
Catholics and the Pro-
testants. In fact, the Belfast
Hebrew Congregation is the
neutral meeting place for an
ecumenical reconciliation
group called PACE —
Protestant-Catholic En-
counter. "But Jews have
never taken part in the
meetings," writes Lieberman,
"nor have they been asked
to."
Yet despite this professed
neutrality, Jews seem to
privately side with the Pro-
testants, whom one Belfast
Jew says are pro-Israel
"because they want the
British to deal with terrorists
as firm as the Israelis do. And
Protestants see the IRA [the
Catholic Irish Republic Ar-
my] as being in league with
the PLO." ❑
