itarians, enemies of the
Jewish people, men who
think nothing of killing
millions to achieve their ob-
jectives."
In rejecting a PaleStinian
state on the West Bank,
Shamir said: "If they want a
Palestinian entity according
to the principle of self-
determination, it's con-
ceivable and easier to have it
on the other side of the Jor-
dan River."
The most Palestinians liv-
ing on the West Bank could
hope for, according to Shamir,
is negotiations for autonomy
under Israeli rule.
Referring to a possible
Palestinian state in Jordan,
he added: "You have a bigger
territory there and far more
Palestinians than in the ter-
ritories. Nor are there any
Jews or Israelis there."
He described Jordan's King
Hussein as an "element of
stability in the area" and said
this would no longer be the
case if Jordan ever became a
Palestinian state. "But if the
Jordanian population one day
decides to have a Palestinian
state there, it's up to them,"
he said.
Shamir again rejected the
notion of Israel's exchanging
territory for peace. "It's
nonsense to talk about a ter-
ritorial solution in such a
small geographical area," he
said.
When de Borchgrave cited a
recent editorial in the
Jerusalem Post which recall-
ed that brutal Soviet tactics
had failed to subdue the
Afghan rebels and that
failure should carry a
message for Israel's political
leaders, Shamir said: "My ex-
istence does not depend on
the Jerusalem Post, or what
they're writing."

Libya Refueling
Abilities Probed

Washington (JTA) — In-
telligence services in the
United States and West Ger-
many are continuing to in-
vestigate whether West Ger-
man firms.have been helping
Libya acquire the technology
for midair refueling of its
bombers, which would allow
them to attack Israel and
other countries with chemical
weapons.
Neither
Bonn
nor
Washington has been able to
confirm that Libya has at pre-
sent the capability to refuel
its warplanes in midair,
sources from both countries
said last week.
