that he has invited Russek
and Neal Sher, head of the Of-
fice of Special Investigations,
to meet with him in
Frankfurt during the week of
March 20 to discuss the
controversy.
• Sher, who has aggressively
spearheaded American efforts
to track down Nazi war
criminals, declined to discuss
in any detail why he would
not close the case or make
public the report.
According to the Times,
Sher would only suggest,
without elaboration, that
diplomatic considerations are
among his reasons.
A U.S. government source
who requested anonymity
told the Jewish Telegraphic
Agency on Sunday that it was
the Israeli government that
had requested the report not
be released.
One of the most consistent
skeptics about Mengele's
death is Eva Mozes Kur of
Terre Haute, Ind., who surviv-
ed Mengele's horrific medical
- experiments on twins at
Auschwitz. Five years ago,
she formed a group named
CANDLES (Children of
Auschwitz Nazi Deadly Lab
Experiments Survivors),
made up of twins who had
been Mengele's subjects.
In 1987, she filed a request
for the OSI's final Mengele
report under the Freedom of
Information Act. Last fall, the
Justice Department
responded:
"To date, the United States
has not issued a forensic
report which either accepts or
rejects the premise that the
body located in Brazil was
that of Mengele . The
department has reached no
final determination with
respect to Mengele."

Intifada Weapon
Going To Dogs

Jerusalem (JTA) — A dog
trainer from the West Bank
settlement of Shilo said last
week that he is now training
dogs to attack Palestinian
stone throwers.
Avigdor Shatz, security
chief at Shilo, said he and a
colleague began training dogs
about six months ago to break
up Palestinian protests.
A settlers' newsletter, call-
ing the animals "anti-intifada
dogs," said they were more ef-
fective than an automatic ri-
fle but less deadly: The solu-
tion to the problem of how to
defend oneself without break-
ing the law."
Shatz said he had received
requests from Israelis all over
the country to train their
dogs, but only accepted those
truly needed by their owners
for self-defense.
