LCOHOL RUGS: USE and MISUSE enough to break the dialogue, according to Peace Now leader Amiram Goldblum. "We know the PLO has several factions. There are some people willing to talk to Israelis rather than advocate violence. We are going to ask them (at the conference) to use pressure on those factions that call for violence," Gold- blum says. What will these high-profile events accomplish besides publicity? Is it enough to sway an Israeli government that has an agreement signed by 95 out of 120 Knesset members opposing talks with the PLO and the establish- ment of a Palestinian state? Some agree with Prime Minister Shamir. "They have the ability to create some momentum," says Dr. Ehud Sprinzak, a Hebrew Univer- sity political scientist. "But if Peace Now were to disappear tomorrow, Israel wouldn't be any different." Amiram Goldblum dis- agrees. "There is clear public support for the ideas of Peace Now. We represent 25 percent of the population," he says, calculating the number of Knesset members, including Labor party doves, who sup- port dialogue with the PLO. Gauging the size of the group's constituency is diffi- cult. Peace Now has only re- cently begun to recruit members and to consider opening an office with paid staff. Until now, the move- ment has been guided by local branches of activists, 30 or 40 of whom meet biweekly in a central forum. Sprinzak estimates that Peace Now could achieve a paid-up membership of "a few hundred or a few thousand" Israelis. Still, after Sabra and Shatilla, the group was able to muster 400,000 to protest the direction the war in Lebanon was taking. That was Peace Now's zenith. It went into eclipse when Likud and Labor put together the first national unity government in 1984, ac- cording to Lili Galili of A JEWISH CONCERN Location: Congregation Shaarey. With Labor's Shimon Peres as prime minister and Yitzhak Rabin as defense minister, there was a feeling of, "we have to give them a chance." Rabin, especially, was seen as "one of us," Galili says. When the intifada began in December 1987, Peace Now was characterized by delayed reactions, she says.
