Peace Now demonstrators back talks with the PLO.

months since the Palestinian
uprising began. Although the
army aborted the Day of
Peace, activists say they will
try again.
"You can safely say there is
a revival" of Peace Now, says
Lili Galili, a reporter for the
Hebrew-language daily
Ha'aretz, who has followed
Peace Now for several years.
The group's new lease on
life began at the November
meeting of the Palestine Na-
tional Council in Algiers. The
PNC declared a Palestinian
state in the West Bank and
Gaza, implying acceptance of
the state of Israel. In
December came Palestine
Liberation Organization chief
Yassir Arafat's declaration in
Geneva that the PLO recog-
nized Israel's right to exist,
accepted United Nations
Resolutions 242 and 338 and
renounced the use of terror.
The United States im-
mediately opened a dialogue
with the PLO.
These events allowed Peace
Now to deliver a clear
message, some say for the
first time: Israel must talk
peace to the PLO now.

Golan says the group takes
further comfort from a poll
that indicates 54 percent of
Israelis would be willing to
talk to PLO if it renounces
terror and recognizes Israel.
Both Peace Now and the U.S.
government believe these con-
ditions have been met in the
main. But many Israelis, in-
cluding the Likud and Labor
partners to the National
Unity Government, don't
agree.
So late last year, Peace Now
launched a campaign to con-

vince Israelis to begin talking
to the PLO. A rally in Tel
Aviv brought out 50,000 peo"-
ple in the cold rain, Golan
said. Since January, volun-
teers have manned two vigils,
one outside the prime
minister's residence in
Jerusalem, the other outside
the Defense Ministry in Tel
Aviv. Tote boards tell
passersby the number •of
Jewish and Arab dead and
wounded in the intifada, in-
cluding how many of the
casualties are children.
Most recently came the
people-to-people contacts like
the Day of Peace, long a prac-
tice of more left-wing groups.
"When we launched the
campaign, we didn't know if
we were ahead of the public,"
Golan says. "But even Shamir
knows that he can't just stand
in place."
Peace Now leaders also
have participated in a series
of debates with PLO members
in Europe. Their dialogue will
cross the Atlantic this week-
end when a conference opens
at Columbia University, spon-
sored by New Outlook
magazine, the leftist Israeli
Citizens' Rights Movement
and Mapam parties, and the
Jerusalem Arabic weekly, Al-
Fajr. Several left-wing
Knesset members associated
with Peace Now will meet
PLO ,officials.
The conference comes at the
heels of several terror at-
tempts from Lebanon by
Nayef Hawatmeh's Demo-
cratic Front for the Liberation
of Palestine, a member of the
PLO. While Peace Now con-
siders the attempts to in-
filtrate Israel a breach of the
no-terror pledge, it is not
