Annual Holocaust Event
Begins In Ann Arbor

pile of books is on fire,
and the colorful flame
ignites the bold, black
letters: HOLOCAUST.
A print of a wood cut depicts
a man's arm with a number —
the actual number of a
Holocaust survivor.
These are the works of
University of Michigan artist
Kathleen Crockett Richards,
who designed logos for the
past two years for B'nai
B'rith's Hillel Foundation's
annual Holocaust conferences
at the university.
The 10th annual conference
is slated for March 25-30,
with the Ann Arbor
Reperatory Theater's perfor-
mance of A Shayna Maidel,
the story of a Jewish family
torn apart by the events of the
Hitler era, kicking off the
event this week.
The conference aims to ex-
plain. the Holocaust from
historical and theological
perspectives. Both Jewish and
Christian views will be
explored.
This year's theme is Nazism
and education. Programs will
explore issues of the problems
of the German educational
system at the time and the
methods by which contem-
porary educational systems
study the failure.
Richards and her husband,
Larry Crockett, the director
for special projects at U-M's
college of engineering; began
working on the conference
planning committee after
hearing a speech by a Ger-
man woman who became a
Nazi hunter. The couple —
neither ane Jewish — felt
remembering the Holocaust
was a viable cause.
Crockett and Richards
recently returned from their
first trip to Israel, where they
visited Yad Vashem, the
Holocaust museum, and the
new children's memorial.
That memorial, Richards
said, "was beyond words. You
walk down a corridor, turn
left and turn left again until
it is completely dark. It looks
like a starry night.
"It was perfect. Mournful. It
captured the sadness of loss,"
Richards said. "It was in-
tense."
Crockett recently was nam-
ed co-chairman of a commit-
tee set up by the city of Ann
Arbor to establish a
Holocaust memorial.

Jewish Community Center,
Congregation Shaarey Zedek,
United Hebrew Schools,
Yeshivat Akiva, National
Conference of Synagogue
Youth and Hillel Day School
are co-sponsoring the blood
testing.
'Tests will be conducted from
noon to 3 p.m. Sunday at the
Maple/Drake Jewish Com-
munity Center. There is a $50
charge, and donors have been
asked to help defray the ex-
pense for those who cannot af-
ford to pay.
The blood test takes no
more than two to three
