had expected. "I don't think
I can compare acting to what
I thought it was going to be,"
she said. "When I started off,
it was like 'let's become a
movie star: But it's a totally
different wonderful ex-
perience."
Besides performing in
Beaches and on "Webster"
this year, Bialik also starred,
directed and produced a pro-
duction that's been in the
works for the past eight years
— her bat mitzvah. "At Tem-
ple Israel of Hollywood, every
kid that is bar or bat mitzvah
makes his own service book,"
said Bialik. "You print it
yourself and choose all of the
prayers. You also really lead
the whole service. I did all of
the calligraphy in my book,
and my family and I chose the
prayers. I even read some
Hebrew poems written by my
great-great-grandfather's
first cousin, Chaim Nachman
Bialik, who was once the na-
tional poet of Israel. It was
great to be able to lead my bat
mitzvah?'
Performing in front of a con-
gregation was equally as
satisfying as performing in
front of a television or movie
camera for Bialik. "It's very
different performing in front
of a live audience as opposed
to performing in front of a
movie or television camera,"
noted Bialik. "I enjoyed it as
much as performing in front
of a camera but not more."
Bialik twinned her recent
bat mitzvah with a Soviet
Jewish girl and wrote her a
letter. "I even got a letter
back as a matter of fact," she
said.
Bialik really enjoys Rosh
Hashanah, Yom Kippur and
Chanukah, even though she
and her family don't celebrate
the holiday by giving each
other presents. "On
Chanukah, we don't give
gifts," noted Bialik. "We light
the menorah every night. We
each have our own. I have one
from Israel that my 17-year-
old brother, Isaac, bought for
me. We also play dreidel
games, and my mom makes
latkes."
Not only is her religion
important to her, but so is her
education. "I love school,"
said Bialik, an eighth grader
enrolled in the school's gifted
program. "I really think it's
first priority."
She admits, however, that
working as an actress can
take its toll on her grades.
"Not only is the competition
(to get a part) hard, but I
sometimes miss school and a
couple of A's become B's." For-
tunately for her, she didn't
miss any school while she was
working on Beaches; it was
filmed over the summer.

Despite her acting success, education is still Bialik's top priority.

Bialik said she plans to
continue her education. "I
definitely want to go to col-
lege," said Bialik. "I want to
study marine biology because
I think it's interesting, and I
love animals."
Bialik also enjoys wat-
ching news-oriented televi-
sion programs when she's not
doing her homework. "I like
watching the news and 'Cur-
rent Affair, " she said. "I also
am hooked on 'Cops' and
`America's Most Wanted! "
Bialik, who said she
might be interested in pursu-
ing a newscasting career,
thinks there should be a
newspaper that caters ex-
clusively to children. "I think
they should have a little
newspaper that keeps kids
aware in a language that we
could understand," she noted.

Besides her interests in
news events, she loves listen-
ing to the music of George
Harrison, George Michael
and Michael Jackson. She
also spends time running
track at her school and takes
pride in the hooked rugs she
makes at home.
Her favorite actor is
Mikhail Baryshnikov. "I lov-
ed Baryshnikov in White
Nights," said Bialik. "I think
he's a great actor."
Although critics all over
the country agree that
Bialik's performance in
Beaches was superb, she is
keeping an open mind with
regard to her future
endeavors. "I'm not sure I

want to act when I get older,"
said Bialik. "I might want to
go into a different field?' One
thing is certain though,
whatever interests this
13-year-old young lady
decides to pursue, it's a sure
`Bette' that she'll succeed!
