The shows, which she choreographed for $100 a week, plus housing, entitled her to join the Society of Stage Directors and Choreog- raphers, thus opening doors which had been closed pre- viously because of her non- professional status. Soon, she was choreogra- phing a Florida dinner theater production, perform- ing in the show, and receiving $450 a week for her efforts. (It would be the only time she'd dance professionally onstage.) "I thought I had really, at last, arrived," she says. But when whe returned to New York after the six-month run of the show, no job offers were forthcoming. "So, I started again — sen- ding out all these letters and resumes. I had no agent. I was just working on my own." This time around, however, the resumes, now with a bit of professional experience listed, evoked some positive response and Dodge was hired by several small New York clubs to choreograph cabaret theater productions. Those led to a job at the popular Village Gate in New York and also, eventually, the Dodge's first really "big break" — choreographing She Loves Me at Baltimore's Center Stage Theater in 1985. "It was very exciting," Dodge recalls. "I was working in regional theater, with the right directors, weeks of rehearsal, wonderful actors, people who had Broadway credits. The artistic director recommended me to other ar- tist directors in regional theater for other jobs. I did Little Shop of Horrors in St. Louis, and Guys and Dolls in Springfield, Mass. Although she did eventual- ly acquire an agent, she ad- mits to still spending large chunks of her own time, pur- suing jobs and trying to find "as much work as possible." What's in the future for Marcia Milgrom Dodge? "I want to go to Broadway, of course. And I have dreams about winning a Tony, although I already have my own Tony — my husband." (She and actor Anthony Dodge, also a Detroiter, were wed in 1980.) "The thing is, I don't want to just get to Broadway. I want to get to Broadway so that I can have the credit, and then keep working.
