Tenaglia Upset

elios Tenaglia, who
placed sixth and fifth
in the past two state
high school wrestling tour-
naments, was eliminated
from this year's tournament
at the regional level.
Tenaglia, unbeaten in
regular-season action, finish-
ed 38-3. He won his district,
but the Berkley High star fac-
ed a formidable field of heavy-
weights at the regional. The
top four finishers went on to
take the top four spots at the
state championships last
month.

doormat, placed second in the
Southeastern Michigan
Association (SMA) this
season, behind perennial
wrestling powerhouse Hazel
Park.
Tenaglia was a leader by ex-
ample to his teammates, says
Burwitz. "Helios was
somebody who the younger
wrestlers could look up to —
with a winning record and
always being able to get the
job done. Being a heavy-
weight, he was always the
last wrestler. Kind of nice to
know that if a match was
close coming into the end of
the meets, that we had an ace
in the hole."
Tenaglia won the SMA
tournament, the 40-team
Oakland County Invitational,
Allen Park Invitational,
Dearborn Fordson Invita-
tional and the Ortonville-
Brandon Invitational this
season.

rIbnaglia's style as "very laid-
back. Almost too laid-back. I
think if he would've been a
bit more aggressive I think he
could've won the state. He has
all the natural ability. He has
more ability than anybody
else that was at the tourna-
ment. I just don't think he
was quite aggressive
enough?'
Tenaglia, says Burwitz, is
"a very soft-spoken in-
dividual. He doesn't come off
as forceful or very aggressive.
Just real laid back. He is the
tries-to-be-friends-with-every -
body type of guy. He was
usually friends with every-
body he had to wrestle before
he went on the mat."
But on the mat, says Bur-
witz, Tenaglia is "pretty in-
timidating."
