Hart: no warm support
And rumors that PLO chair-
man Yassir Arafat would ad-
dress the group generated
stiff resistance from pro-Israel
forces on Capitol Hill. A visa
for Souss would provide the
first test of the U.S. policy to
exclude representatives of the
group.
Former senator Gary Hart
is also slated to address the
American-Arab advocacy
group. Hart is the former
presidential frontrunner
whose romantic escapades
ended his quest for the Oval
Office last year.
In the 1984 campaign for
the presidential nomination,
Hart actively pursued the
Jewish vote, accusing fron-
trunner Walter Mondale of
fudging on the question of
moving the U.S. embassy to
Jerusalem. While in the
Senate, Hart developed a
reputation as a reliable sup-
porter of Israel, despite the
fact that he never enjoyed
warm support within the
Jewish community.
The group will also hear
from Danny Allison, mayor of
Palestine, Texas. Allison was
part of an ADC sponsored
tour of the Middle East for
mayors of U.S. towns with the
names Palestine, Hebron and
Bethlehem. According to the
ADC, there are some 13
towns with those names.

Arab Groups
May Oppose
Moderate Kelly

Several weeks ago, pro-
Israel groups here were quiet-
ly applauding the selection of
John H. Kelly as assistant
secretary of state for Near
Eastern and South Asian
affairs.
According to Capitol Hill
sources, there has been moun-
ting pressure from Arab-
American groups to derail the
Kelly nomination.
