LCOHOL
RUGS: USE and MISUSE

said. "We only raise money
for our people who need it."
Educating the American
public about the Palestinians
is another goal, so the PAS
oversees visits to the West
Bank and Gaza. In 1986, the
PAS sponsored a delegation of
American lawyers and legal
experts to observe the depor-
tation appeals of four
Palestinians.
It also sends Americans
each year to the NaZareth
Voluntary Work Camp, a pro-
gram started in 1977. Ameri
said the project began when
Israel cut funds to Nazareth
after the city elected a corn-
munist and Palestinian na-
tionalist, Tawfiq Zayyad, as
mayor.
The PAS sends volunteers
from 20 countries to Nazareth
to help renovate the city, "to
kind of compensate for the
loss in the budget cut," Ameri
said. They get the added
bonus of a one-week stay in
Gaza or the West Bank.

T

he day is just begin-
ning at the Palestine
Aid Society. Anan
Ameri is opening a new pack
of cigarettes and pouring
another cup of coffee.
She leans forward across
her large desk. The poster
with the big black letters
spelling out "PALESTINE"
looms over her shoulder.
She's heard the question
many times before and she
doesn't like it. Suppose a
Palestinian state is establish-
ed. What guarantee would
Israel have for its security?
Ameri is armed with her
answer:
"Why is it the Palestinians
always have to prove their
good intentions?" she says.
"The Israeli government says
Palestinians can't have a
state until they prove they
won't attack Israel. How do
we prove that?
"Look at the way people
openly speak about 'transfer?
(The proposal to evacuate all
Arabs from the West Bank
and Gaza). 'Transfer' used to
be talked about only in
whispers. Now it's in the
papers.
"What does the Israel
government want from the
Palestinians? They say they
want PLO recognition? I'd
like to make a list of all the
ways the Palestinians have
recognized Israel and all the
ways Israel has recognized
the Palestinians. I can tell
you (the latter) would be
much shorter.
"Why shouldn't Israel have
to do something first?" she
says. "Let them come to the
Palestinians. After all, Israel
was established at my ex-
pense." ❑
