Zubin Mehta

Israel, and because its
members represent many dif-
ferent nationalities, Yiddish
is the common language
spoken in rehearsals.
Mehta first began his rela-
tionship with the Israel
Philharmonic in 1969 as its
first permanent music ad-
viser. Their ensuing relation-
ship through the 1970s led to
Mehta's election in 1981 by
the orchestra members as the
Music Director for Life. Con-
current with his Israel
Philharmonic appointment,
Mehta is also music director
of the New York Philhar-
monic and conducts regular-
ly at the Vienna State Opera
and the Royal Opera at Co-
vent Garden. As guest con-
ductor, he has led virtually
every major orchestra on
every continent.
Mehta gained worldwide
recognition as music director
of the Montreal Symphony
from 1961 to 1967 and from
his appointment in 1962 as
music director of the Los
Angeles Philharmonic. The
latter position made him, at
age 26, the youngest music
director of a major American
orchestra.
