Oakland County Republican
Committee chairman
"First, it shows the party is
maintaining its move to the
left, and second, it shows
Brown is affiliated with the
(Democratic) left of (Sen. Ed-
ward) Kennedy and (Jesse)
Jackson," he said. "Does that
(association) mean the party
is losing its commitment to
the Jewish community," con-
sidering Jackson's PLO
amendment plank?
Alexander said, "I've been
hearing from Republicans
who are saying, 'Hasn't the
Democatic Party learned its
lesson? The Democratic Par-
ty hasn't won an election
since 1976. Obviously, the
mood of the country is more
conservative — why put up
people who don't appeal?' "
"As party chairs, we don't
set policy, we lead. Will he
(Brown) be leading the
Democratic Party to the
Jackson Amendment in the
next election? Will Brown be
taking his cue from Jesse
Jackson? Will the next
Democratic platform have a
strong Palestinian plank and
a tepid debate to mollify the
Jewish community?"
Echoing Alexander was
State Rep. Dave Honigman
(R-West Bloomfield), who ad-
mitted to mixed feelings
about Brown's ascension.
"Number one, I'm happy to
see a black person head a
political party. It shows pro-
gress and it is heartening and
gratifying. It shows we are
making good strides forward
in accepting black people.
"On the other hand, due to
Brown's association with
Jackson, I am concerned he
might turn the Democratic
Party in a direction that is
adverse to Jewish interests,
especially on the issue of
Israel.
"As for any Democrats
changing allegiance to the
Republican Party, I hope it's
not on the basis of his
(Brown's) being black. I don't
think Republicans should go
out and recruit bigots."
But if Brown's views are the
same as Jackson's, Honigman
warned, "he will indeed drive
out moderate Democrats."
On the national level,
Brown received a letter from
the National Jewish Leader-
ship Council, which was
created last fall to boost
Michael Dukakis' candidacy
in the Jewish community.
Pointing to the overwhelm-
ingly Democratic vote of the
Jewish community in
November, the letter in-

dicated the change from Paul
Kirk to Ron Brown would do
nothing to change that
longstanding allegiance,
despite Brown's participation
in Jackson's campaign.
