Beit-Hallahmi believes
Israel will be forced to retreat
and decline as the right-wing
is deposed, but the current
situation is the reverse. The
Palestinian uprising has the
Israeli right on the ascendan-
cy and, ironically, Israel's in-
ternational relations have
improved.
Like other critics of Israel,
the author will have to con-
tinue to hope for a re-
enactment of the Battle of
Hittin, which he cites as the
decisive battle in which
Saladin defeated the
Crusaders. This time,
however, I expect the outcome
to be different.

Israelis are only concerned
about their image and not
apartheid. There is a debate
in Israel on this issue and last
year the government voted to
impose sanctions against
South Africa.
Moreover, Beit-Hallahmi
proves the democratic nature
of the Israeli government.
The majority in Israel
disagrees with Beit-
Hallahmi; nevertheless, he
and other dissenters are per-
mitted to express their views.
I challenge Beit-Hallahmi to
find a Thrid World govern-
ment where that is true.

those states. He has no
evidence, of course, and fails
to acknowledge that the
African states were grateful
for the assistance which
yielded little tangible
benefits for Israel.
In by far the longest
chapter in his book, Beit-
Hallahmi goes so far as to
claim that Israel and South
Africa have formed an
alliance despite the fact that
Israel voted for the 1962
United Nations sanctions
against South Africa. He
repeats familiar rumors of
their involvement in nuclear
weapons development and
other areas of cooperation,
but presents no new evidence
to support his charges. He
argues by assertion in the
hope that linking the two
countries will reinforce Arab
propaganda equating Israel,
South Africa, Zionism,
racism, and apartheid.
Beit-Hallahmi complains
about the media's image of
Israel as a democracy. He is
unhappy that Israelis are not
as vocal as he would like in
their opposition to Israel's
policies toward the Third
World. It is arguable whether
Israelis have protested
vicorously enough, but it is
simply untrue to claim that
ats and more.

Criticism
opinion is to repudiate and
condemn the arrogant,
divisive and intrusive posi-
tion in meeting with the PLO
leader.
The group, it seems, was
duped and exploited by
Arafat for propaganda pur-
poses, thus embarrassing and
doing harm to the image of
Israel. Fortunately, these
idealogues are not threatened
with ten bullets as Arafat
threatened the mayor of
Bethlehem.
The intellectual vacuum of
the participant was mani-
fested by his defense that the
PLO attacked Jews in Rome
and London, and therefore he
was right to be concerned.
How does that give him the
right to negotiate for Israel?
What concessions did he offer
on behalf of World Jewry?
What guarantee did he offer
Israel in the event of a crisis?
Rosensaft's logic echoes
that of the hijackers of the
TWA demanding that the U.S.
squeeze Israel to make im-
possible concessions. The
same "leader" further shows
his naivete and ignorance by
his defense that the PLO
representatives were "conser-
vatively dressed and seemed
educated," as if that should
determine Israel's security
issue.
One must reflect on the
character of our "leadership"
that permits such irresponsi-
ble and irrational behavior.

Rosensaft's speech to Labor Zionist
Alliance Branch 960. Her report

Rosensaft.
Israelis Need
Jewish Tourists
Like most Israelis, I am con-
cerned about the prevailing
conditions in our country. I
am particularly worried
about the almost total
absence of Jewish tourists,
especially from the United
States and Canada.
As a result, our hotels are
empty and we are suffering a
loss of much needed foreign
currency. But, as important
as this currency is to us, our
greatest need is moral sup-
port and identification with
Israel. And this is best ex-
pressed by the continuous
presence of large numbers of
