THE Clarion Hotel Young Variety Club of Detroit cordially invites you to attend writing music today? Elliot Carter, Witold Lutoslawski, Leonard Bernstein, Phillip Glass, John Adams and Joan Tower. "Of course, in years to come, we won't hear of most of the people writing music to- day. But then, that is true of any musical period." Rouder's piano, which she now plays "irregularly," fits comfortably into her Birm- ingham apartment, which is filled with the numerous an- tique pieces she's collected. She's especially proud of the apartment's natural wood floor, which she stripped and refinished by herself last summer. When Rouder manages to tear herself away from the demands of her new job, one may find her on the tennis court or at a meeting of the Sierra Club, where she can advocate on behalf of our en- vironment, another of her serious concerns. But music still ranks number one on Willa Rouder's scale of interests. "At times in my life I felt presssured to do something practical with my music, like music education or music therapy, but so far I'm really glad that I resisted the fast track career." ❑ Institute Sets Art Show Sholem Aleichem In- stitute's 26th annual art show will be held March 10-12 at the Shenandoah Country Club, 5600 Walnut Lake, West Bloomfield.
