In fact, there are about 40
non-Jewish students at Her-
zlia today, attracted by the
high quality of education.
There is a growing room for
more of them.
"I see a diminishing popu-
lation, an aging population,
and, depending on what hap-
pens, the next five to 10 years
will influence the outcome of
this community," said Kaplin-
ski. "I think the infrastruc-
ture here is still very strong.

Rabbi Rubenstein, principal Jewish
chaplain of the South African
Defense Force, says Israel's lack of
Zionism has contributed to disil-
lusionment among South African
Jews.
We have our Board of Depu-
ties and our Zionist Federa-
tion which work very, very
closely together and are plan-
ning for the future."
Whether or not that future
holds promise for South
Africa, or for Zionism, or
neither, remains to be seen. ❑

Arens Talks
With Thatcher
London (JTA) British Prime
Minister Margaret Thatcher
and Israeli Foreign Minister
Moshe Arens emerged smil-
ing from their 85-minute
meeting last week, but it was
clear from briefings by both
sides that there had been
some tough taking, with
Arens rejecting Thatcher's
plea for Israel to respond to
PLO "peace initiatives."
"I don't think the PLO has
anything to contribute to the
peace process," Arens told
newsmen.
Both did agree it was vital
that Middle East peace
negotiations started as soon
as possible.
