Los Angeles (JTA) — Pro-
Israel forces recently won a
clear victory at the California
Democratic Party convention,
carrying their own resolution
while defeating measures ad-
vanced by an Arab-American
group.
The face-off in Sacramento
was triggered by two resolu-
tions submitted by the Arab-
American Democratic Club
and the California
Democratic Council, a
grassroots organization, call-
ing for the establishment of a
Palestinian state alongside
Israel.
Neither proposal got past
the Resolutions Committee,
which instead reported out a
counterresolution, backed by
pro-Israel forces, which reaf-
firmed the state party's stan-
ding Middle East plank.
The plank urges a dialogue
involving the United States,
Israel and the Palestinians to
secure a just political resolu-
tion to the conflict. It also
lauds Israel as America's
most dependable and
democratic ally in the Middle
East.
When the pro-Israel resolu-
tion reached the floor, Arab-
Americans moved an amend-
ment endorsing an Israeli-
Palestinian dialogue "based
on the principle of securing
the mutual recognition and
fundamental human rights of
both people."
The amendment was
defeated, though only by an
estimated 3-2 margin among
the 2,800 delegates. The pro-
Israel resolution was then
carried by about 70 percent to
30 percent.
Although the Arab-
Americans had collected the
requisite 200 signatures to
bypass the Resolutions Com-
mittee and bring the original
proposals to the floor, they
failed to do so after defeat of
their amendment.

Eban: PLO
Not A Threat

Amsterdam (JTA) — Abba
Eban, Israel's elder
statesman and an outspoken
dove, recently told an overflow
audience of Jews here that a
Palestinian state would not
imperil Israel nor present a
military threat, because
Israel has a vastly superior
military force.
Eban also said he was con-
vinced the Palestine Libera-
tion Organization does not
want to annex Jerusalem,
east or west, but wants only
sovereignty over the mosques
on the Temple Mount.
