Tel Aviv (JTA) — Brig. Gen.
David Laskov, an inventor of
novel weapons systems for the
Israel Defense Force and the
oldest officer on active duty in
the IDF, died last week at 87.
He was buried in Haifa.
Laskov, who served for 42
years, was reported to be the
oldest soldier in the world.
An engineer by training, he
founded the IDF's Yiftah unit
specializing in research and
development of new weapons
systems.
He was awarded the Secur-
ity Prize in 1973 for design-
ing a special bridge used by
Israeli troops to cross the
Suez Canal to outflank the
Egyptian army in the Yom
Kippur War.
Born in Omsk, Russia,
Laskov was expelled from
medical school for Zionist ac-
tivities. He studied engineer-
ing in Leningrad and left the
USSR for China in 1926.
Arriving in Palestine in
1928 with his wife, Zippora,
Laskov studied engineering
at the Haifa Technion.
He served in the British ar-
my during World War II and
joined Hagana, the forerun-
ner of the IDF, in 1947.
His wife said he died after
falling in the shower.
