Israeli Lawyer Will Speak Raymond Tanter Yosef Olmert The fifth annual Israel Con- ference Day will take place March 12 at the Rackham School of Graduate Studies at the University of Michigan. ICD is a day-long academic program of lectures, panel discussion and film exploring the social, political, and cultural life of Israel. The public is invited. i Keynote speakers will be Wolf Blitzer, Washington cor- respondent; and Israel Peleg, Israel consul general. Other participants include the first female brigadier general in the Israel Defense Force, Amira Dotan; laWyer and feminist Rachel Ben- ziman U-M Political Science Professor Raymond 'ranter; U- M English Professor Anita Norich; Richard Strauss, editor of the Middle East Policy Survey; political scien- tist Yosef Olmert; historian Elie Rekhess; filmmaker Dani Wollman; and playwright and novelist Nava Semel. The topics of the day are: the impact of the Palestinian uprising on the peace process; media reporting on the Mid- dle East; the second genera- tion: the scars of Israeli sons and daughters of Holocaust survivors; sexual discrimina- tion in Israel; and Israel's developing film industry. The conference is accom- panied by an art exhibit of work by Israeli painters and photographers. AEIN Will Honor Lawrence Hyman Lawrence Hyman Lawrence Hyman, an alum- nus of the Alpha Epsilon Pi Fraternity chapter at Wayne State University, will be honored "for his many years of devoted service to AEPi and to Jewish life," at an alumni buffet brunch on March 12 at the Tam O'Shanter Country Club. Hyman has served in many capacities in AEPi both as an undergraduate and as an alumnus and is financial ad- viser to the chapter at the University of Michigan. He was past vice-president and secretary in the Metropolitan Detroit B'nai B'rith Council and is a board member of the Michigan Region B'nai B'rith Youth Organization. Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity, a national Jewish social fraternity with more than 50,000 alumni throughout the United States and Canada, is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year. AEPi was founded November PNAI (Parents of North American Israelis) will hold a meeting at 8 p.m. Thursday at the Jewish Community Center Jimmy Prentis Morris Building. Col. Linda Shafir, an attorney, will speak on "The Inheritance Laws of Israel." Col. Shafir has served 18th years in the Israeli army. All parents of children liv- ing in Israel are welcome. Goldstein Will Retire At Transport Service After 39 years of service to the Jewish community, Isadore Goldstein has an- nounced his retirement, effec- tive the end of February. He has been director of the Jewish Welfare Federation's Transportation Service for the past seven years, and ex- ecutive secretary of United Hebrew Schools before that. The buses, with United Hebrew School markings, serve Jewish institutions, non-profit organizations, social service agecies and schools in the general com- munity. The service has rais- ed its rates only once in the past six years. The agency is run under the supervision of Federation, through UHS. It operates 70 buses and vans year-round. In his seven years at the helm, Goldstein has helped turn the service into the largest opera- tion of its kind in America. More than 60 friends and Teddy Bear Clinic Planned The Song Sisters will per- form a "Teddy Bear Sing- Along" at 1 p.m. Feb. 26 at Temple Emanu-El, as part of a "Sunday in the Park with J.E.F.F." (Jewish Experiences For Families). The program will include a puppet show by the Germ- busters of Sinai Hospital, games and other picnic-type activities, and a Teddy Bear clinic comprised of physicians from Sinai Hospital: Dr. Con- rad Giles checking teddy bear eyes, Dr. Richard Grugel checking teddy bear arms and legs, and Dr. Marty Levinson checking teddy bears' overall well-being. This program, designed to teach pre-schoolers about good health, is open to all pre- schoolers and their parents. Reservations are required.
