THE JEWISH NEWS 20300 Civic Center Drive Suite 240 Southfield, MI 48076-4138 OR ES 'E. E BIG SAL Beginning: Saturday, February 18, 1989 ONE 1 ardent supporters are con- vinced that the key to this case is an effort, within the top echelons of the U.S. government, to keep Israel in its place. They portray Caspar Weinberger as "the heavy" here, seeking to balance Israel's power in the Mideast and lessen her value as a strategic partner with the U.S. And they say Pollard is a hero who not only saved Israel, but America and the free world: One recent report by Emanuel Winston, a writer and Pollard advocate, asserts that it was Pollard who tipped off Israel to news of Libya's chemical warfare plant years ago. Others supporters are wary of the conspiracy theories and simply believe that the sentences in this case were excessively harsh and that Anne's lack of medical treat- ment demands action. Hannah Storch says that all who hear the Pollard family presentation come away con- vinced that an injustice was done, and she says she will keep working as long and as hard as she can on Jonathan and Anne's behalf, writing letters to congressmen and local and national Jewish organizations. Critics assert that Pollard pled guilty to espionage and deserves what he gets; casual observers remain puzzled by the case, unsure who to believe and how to separate politics from emotion. But it is clear that the case is gain- ing public attention here and in Israel. And whatever the U.S. government's reasons — conspiracy or not — the facts indicate that Jonathan and Anne Pollard have been treated excessively harshly. An American Jewish com- munity initially shaken by the dual-loyalty dilemma and feelings of guilt now seems poised to take more ag- gressive action on the Pollards' behalf. Swiss Catalog Deletes Israel Geneva (JTA) — Four leading Swiss travel agencies have dropped Israel from their 1989 tour catalogs. A spokesman for the in- dustry explained that the Swiss public considers trips to Israel too risky because of the Palestinian uprising. The travel agencies no longer promoting Israel tours are Kuoni, Hotel Plan, Exco and Pimholtz. 60%-i 5% 00 We've Just Moved ear Van Dresses tkVsieningw at IN VOGUE ND . • .
