discrediting minority con-
cerns as a major cause.
Sears says "There's a huge
vacuum out there waiting to
be filled. This generation of
children has inherited a
phony color blindness to
begin with, not to mention a
loss of basic white indif-
ference to the whole pro-
blem."
The white pride message is
reaching kids in upper
middle-class homes. In
England, where skinheads
were born in the early 1970s,
the movement still is compos-
ed primarily of working-class
youth. They direct most of
their attacks against im-
migrants. The phenomenon
has spread to Holland,
Belgium and France and
Germany..
England is the biggest ex-
porter of neo-Nazi heavy
metal music from groups like
Screwdriver, Oi Polloi, Chaos
UK, White Pride, Agnostic
Front and Forskins. In the
Detroit area, such records are
collectors' items among
skinheads..
"Many record stores refuse
to carry those bands' works
anymore," said one Royal Oak
store owner, who complained
that hundreds of skinheads
congregate in the city's
downtown.

any point to the
spate of nationally
televised shows with
guest skinheads as the source
behind the recent surge in
skinhead attacks here and
elsewhere.
Says Doug Earp, owner of a
record store in Flint that car-
ries skinhead music, "The
kids come in comparing who
has watched the Geraldo
Rivera program on cassette
the most times. Some claim
they have watched it 50
times!"
"Without a doubt, Rivera's
show (in which he suffered a
broken nose) gave credibility
to the skinheads," says jour-
nalist Shriner. "They went on
to that show recruiting
members, and they are get-
ting the new members they
wanted. It strengthened their
main line, which is, 'It's us
against them."
Eva Sears concurs. "We
strongly urged both Rivera
and Oprah Winfrey not to air
programs on the skinheads
because we view these enter-
tainment news shows as ter-
ribly counter-productive.
What disturbs me now is that
we are getting calls from
smaller cities, even a village
in upstate New York, where
gangs of skinheads are first
appearing. We have seen a
100-fold increase in skinhead
incidents in the last year."

Sears said she has received
a number of calls from
parents alarmed to find their
children reading the The Pro-
tocols of the Elders of Zion.
"If it were my kid, I'd march
him down to a Holocaust
center to start. If it happen-
ed in my school, I'd have every
homeroom class designate a
youngster to attend a council
meeting with racism as its
agenda, item number one,"
Sears says. Every child needs
to be told in plain English ex-
actly what's wrong with the
phrase 'white pride.' "
""Had we won the Fort
Smith case, it would have set
the white supremacy move-
ment back by 15 to 20 years,"
Shriner says. "I think we are
starting all over again with
the skinheads!'

Soviets Open
Jewish Center

New York (JTA) — The
opening of a Jewish cultural
center in Moscow last Sunday .
was preceded by a flurry of
statements by Soviet officials,
signifying the lifting of
decades-old restrictions on
the expression of Jewish
culture and the granting of of-
ficial legitimacy to a viable
Jewish life in the Soviet
Union.
The center, the first in the
Soviet Union since the days of
Josef Stalin, was attended by
delegates from around the
world, including Soviet am-
bassadors from the United
States, Great Britain, Cana-
da, France and Australia, as
well as a group of Israeli
diplomats.
The Solomon Mikhoels
center, most recently a movie
theater near the center of
Moscow, was addressed by
Edgar Bronfman, president of
the World Jewish Congress,
and Nobel Peace laureate Elie
Weisel.
There was no form'al
greeting from the Soviet
government, although a
member of the Foreign
Ministry's humanitarian af-
fairs department and a
member of the Cultural
Ministry did attend the open-
ing ceremonies.
Nevertheless, the last week
saw again a change in how
the Soviet Union is facing up
to its past. Two Soviet
historians denounced Soviet
anti-Zionist campaigning of
the last 20 years, comparing
it with Nazi anti-Semitism.
Sergei Rogov, a former
diplomat at the Soviet Em-
bassy in Washington, and
Vladimir Nosenko wrote an
attack on this official anti-
Semitism, saying it helped
