that we didn't see anything.
We saw leftovers. We were
tourists who came 40 years
too late. What we saw doesn't
even approach a fraction of
what the survivors and vic-
tims of the Holocaust saw and
felt.
How could I possibly tell the
congregation about Poland
and the Holocaust when I

still don't understand what I
saw?
I couldn't. Obviously. But I
felt, and still feel, like I have
to try anyway. And so I'll keep
showing the slides, and giv-
ing the speeches. Because
there's so much that I do have
to say, and want to tell.
I just wish that I had more
time.

warns that Israel may be
destroying itself- from within.
How true. He is right on
target. He and his kind are
the carpenter ants that
destroy the house — the
Jewish state — from within.
Mr. Harkabi keeps
repeating the terms reality,
transfer and religious ex-
tremism, etc. How sad it is
that a person like this, who
served in high military and
state positions, pulls a cover
over his eyes and makes his
mind blank when it comes to
real realities past and pre-
sent: Killing Jews and
destroying. Jewish property by
Arabs in the years 1921, 1929
and 1936-1939 when there
was no Jewish state. What
was the excuse and problem
in those years?
Mr. Harkabi creates and
promotes defeatism among
American Jewry and in
Israel. By publishing his book
Israel's -Fateful Hour in 1986
which spells out withdrawal
from the so-called "occupied
territories" —Judea, Samaria
\ and Gaza — Mr. Harkabi
strongly tells American
Jewry to criticize Israel.
His goal is to pressure
Israel. By doing so, he and
other "personalities" en-
courage the Arabs and the
result was the Arab intifada.
Those defeatists see the
Arab side only as good,
moderate and -with lots of suf-
fering. But they look the
other way when they see
what the Arabs plan to do to
the Jewish state and its
Jewish population .. .
Remember: united we
stand, divided we fall.

Chemical Story
Damaging To Israel

At a time when the State of
Israel needs everyone's sup-
port, I found your article
"Chemical Nightmare" (Jan.
27) very untimely and in poor
taste.
Israel is begging for tourists
to travel within the country,
and you are printing pictures

of Israeli children wearing
gas masks.
How about doing an article
on the hundreds of local
children that have spent their
summer in Israel? You could
have a recent tourist of Israel
retell his/her pleasant
experiences.

-Mitzvah Heroes
Appreciated

Thank you for your
beautiful story on Chuck
(Pearlstein — Feb. 3). You tru-
ly captured the young man we
all know and love. Even your
photos were just like him.
From the time he was a lit-
tle boy, Chuck has dedicated
himself to doing mitzvot. I
realize there are many people
in our community who quiet-
ly go about helping others,
asking for no recognition, (as
evidenced by your other three
Mitzvah Heroes). But that he
was singled out for this great
honor is just wonderful.

Swimming Pool
Vs.'The Elderly

After reading your article
about the swimming pool to
be built at the Jewish Com-
munity Center in Oak Park
for $2 million — for people
who drive, can help them-
selves and can go anyplace for
recreation — it made me
think about our Jewish peo-
ple in foster care and nursing
homes, forgotten by their
families and everyone else.
They are isolated, with no
future, no recreation what-
soever and no hope.
Something should be done
for them.
A few frineds and I, as
Jewish Vocational Service
volunteers, feel very bad
when we visit them. We
should not be talking about a
swimming pool for people
that can help themselves, be
part of our community and
enjoy life.
