Mission For 21 Detroiters
Leads To Discoveries In Israel

For the 21 Detroiters on last
month's United Jewish Ap-
peal Regional Discovery Mis-
sion, being in Israel was like
coming home.
Marta Rosenthal and
James August led the local
group for the Jewish Welfare
Federation. Detroiter Ben
Rosenthal was UJA missions
coordinator for the Midwest
region.
"The weather was wonder-
ful, the people were friendly
and the sights were as inspir-
ing as ever," said August.
"There's no question that
going on a mission is the best
way to see what is going on in
Israel. The speakers were
knowledgeable, and each day
was more interesting and
fascinating than the one
before."
A veteran of nine Israel
trips, August saw something
new this time around: When
he walked down the street,
Israelis stopped him to say,
"Thank you for coming to
Israel."
For Randie Levin, a first-
time traveller to Israel who
staffed the mission for
Federation, the most moving
experience was a visit to the
Western Wall.
"Seeing Israel gives you a
sense of yourself as a Jew,"
said Levin. "Just being there
is incredible when you think
of all the history that the land
holds."
"We went to a moshav
where they grow baby's
breath flowers, we saw lush
green forests and strawber-
ries growing in the sand. It's

hard to believe that it was
once all desert."
According to Rosenthal, the
welcome , that the Israelis
gave the group was incredible.
"You can't imagine how hap-
py they were to see 150
Americans In Janaury."
For Marta Rosenthal, on
her fourth Israel trip, going to
Yavne was a highlight. In
Yavne, Detroit's Project
Renewal sister city, the group
mingled with residents, had
dinner and saw some of the
facilities that will benefit

from Federation's Project
Renewal Campaign.
"People who knew nothing
about Project Renewal were
really overwhelmed with
what our community is doing
in Yavne," said Marta.
"The warmth of the Israelis
was incredible. Everywhere
we went we were thanked.
The owner of the Plaza
Tiberias Hotel met with Ben
and thanked him for coming!
Shop owners were thrilled to
see us too."

mission included: Sarasota,
Fla.; Fort Wayne and South
Bend, Ind.; Lexington, Ky..;
