etirement doesn't
seem to be a word in
Murray Hartz's per-
sonal dictionary . . . He left
the Joseph Frankel Co. after
40 years without missing a
day . . . With Murray at the
helm, it grew from a small
wholesale novelty company to
one of the largest wholesale
health and beauty aids com-
panies in the country.
One time, a Fortune 500
company called him to come
up with a sales gimmick to
promote its spark plugs,
which he did . . . U.S. Autolite
soon sent him a purchase
order for one million spark
plugs . . . Word spread: "If you
can't sell it, call Murray
Hartz" . . . Plaques in his of-
fice told of "Largest Bromo
Seltzer order ever shipped to
one location in the world!" .. .
"10,000 truckloads of
Listerine sold to one account
in Detroit" . . . One after-
noon, Murray purchased and
ordered one million cans of
Aqua Net Hair Spray, the
largest single order in
Faberge's history of the early
, '70s.
In 1978, Murray "retired"
. . . Customers and friends
flew in from all over the U.S.
to attend an affair where he
said he would have many fond
memories of the industry and
his party . . . Two weeks later,
Murray was back in business
. . . This time with an
energetic toy broker who had
more energy than money .. .
Soon after, he built the R.T.
Hermans and Company into
one of the leading "closeout"
wholesale houses in the area
. . . and then in the country.
In the early '80s, Murray
was in a terrible automobile
accident .. The seven doc-
tors working around the clock
to save his life couldn't believe
how he survived . . . Two
months later, he walked out of
the hospital with the aid of a
walker . . . and back to work.
Again, in 1987, Murray
retired . . . Again a big retire-
ment party . . . Again his
speech of thanks . . . And
again, two weeks later, Mur-
ray was selling from his
retirement condo in Pompano
Beach, Fla.
Murray Hartz retire? .. .
Maybe some day . . . He'll
celebrate his 79th birthday
this year . . . if he ever takes
a break long enough from
work!

LOCAL EXECUTIVE
complained bitterly to his
wife that every evening when
returning home after a hard
day at the office she would
greet him with some depress-
ing tale of woe . . . One day
the maid had quit, the next
day the furnace broke, then a

mortgage payment was due
and so on ... ."If you can't say
anything pleasant when I
come home," he said, "don't
say anything at all."
The next evening when he
came home his wife ran over
to hime with a big smile, gave
him a hug and passionate
kiss . . . "That's better!" he
beanied. "And how are things
at home?"
"Darling," she said, "Our
six children grow more
brilliant, more adorable and
give us more nachas every
day."
"Of course," he agreed.
"And what have they done to-
day?"
"Today," she said, "five of
them did not break a leg."
QUICKIES . . . A convict
serving a life sentence in jail
writes a weekly column for
the prison newspaper . . . He
calls it "Here Today. Here
Tomorrow" . . . A trigger-
tempered boss caught an
employee reading his
newspaper during working
hours, and barked, "When
you get to the Help Wanted
ads, start making notes." .. .
At a party, there are two
kinds of people . . . those who
want to go home early and
those who want to be last
ones in the place . . . Trouble
is they're always married to
each other.
