cording to the news. If a story
breaks they'll change."
The same is true for his
radio show. "Sometimes I'll
forget. I'll come in, there's a
little briefing, there'll be a lit-
tle note. 'Tonight's guest is
such-and-such! But basically
I take it from the top. A little
more preparation at CNN
(because) a lot of the shows
are news-oriented. So they'll
brief me a little more. 'This
happened today, the Senate
voted . . : but not a lot!'
He does have to keep up on
world events, but he says he
would do that even if he did
not have to. For example, "I
could never vacation in a
place where I'm out of touch
with what's going on in the
world?'
King also works in print,
writing weekly sports column
in USA Today, as well as two
books. His first book was an
autobiography; his second,
titled, Mr. King, You're Hay-
ing a Heart Attack.
A publisher, Delacorte, ask-
ed him to do the book after
the heart attack but before
his bypass surgery. King
donates his share of the pro-
ceeds from the book, co-
authored with B.D. Cohen,
and from speaking
engagements to the Larry
King Cardiac Foundation,
which pays for operations for
those who' cannot afford
them.
King says he cannot choose
a favorite interview from the
many he has conducted since
1960, but mentions the
names of Eleanor Roosevelt,
Adlai Stevenson, John
Steinbeck, Frank Sinatra and
Danny Kaye as among his
most memorable. He would
like to add Laurence Olivier
and Mikhail Gorbachev to
that list. -
A long-time sports fan,
King was the radio color an-
nouncer for the Miami
Dolphins football team in the
early to mid-70s. He still does
a few Baltimore Orioles
baseball games each year, for
fun. One of the things he likes
about Detroit is the sports. "If
my team can't win, I would
like the Tigers to win; I like
the Red Wings to win, the
Lions, Pistons .. .
"Hank Greenberg was one
of my favorites . . . I just got
a letter from his widow; she
lives in Beverly Hills. She
says she listens and watches
every night, and how much
Hank and I wouldn've liked
each other. Which was a very
nice thing to say. I was a great
admirer of his."
