IT'S BEEN almost 40
years since South Pacific first
opened on Broadway at the
Majestic Theatre, April 7,
1949 . . . Yet, this delightful
musical continues to enter-
tain audiences across the
country, as it is doing at Fox
Theatre thru this Sunday.
South Pacific was awarded
a Pulitzer Prize for drama,
and for the first time, the
committee included a corn-
poser (Richard Rodgers) in the
drama prize. The show ran for
almost five years on Broad-
way and was second only to
Oklahoma! as the longest-
running musical.
One must wonder who's
creative genius is responsible
for such overwhelming suc-
cess? . . . In actuality, the
outstanding work is the
result of a collaborated effort
among four men . . . director
Joshua Logan, who suggested
the idea of doing a musical
based on James Michener's
collection of short stories,
Tales of the South Pacific,
producer Leland Hayward,
who immediately saw its
possibilities, composer Rich-
ard Rodgers, who read the en-
tire collection of stories and
then asked his lyricist part-
ner, Oscar Hammerstein, to
read the book.
The venture became a joint
production between the four
men with Logan and Ham-
merstein co-authoring the
book of the show along with
its music numbers.
After that 1949 opening
night, the next morning there
were not only rave reviews in
the papers, but also ticket
lines around the block .. .
Seats were almost impossible
to get at any price . . . Its
celebrated musical score is
still one of the most beloved
t and best-remembered.
The Detroit production of
South Pacific stars Robert
Goulet, as the stage of the Fox
Theatre is beautifully trans-
formed into two small islands
in the South Seas.
HEY FOLKS with video
cameras . . . Here's a chance
to get some of your footage on
WXYZ-TV, Channel 7 . . .
Send them for a possible
showing in a program set up
to make use of material shot
by amateurs . . . To encourage
viewers to submit new foot-
age, Ch. 7 has set up a
24-hour hotline number,
827-3677.
