Smith from Kate and Allie. "I
was at Stagedoor and saw a
rehearsal," said Grant. "I
heard this incredible voice
(Gurwin's) and was so taken
with him. He was just so
wonderful and outstanding; I
just had to have this kid."
Fortunately for Gurwin,
memorizing lines has never
been a problem — even
though he occasionally per-
forms in more than one pro-
duction at a time. "I have
kind of a photographic
memory," said Gurwin. "The
trick is to concentrate a lot
before a show starts."
Gurwin also has never had
difficulty projecting when he
performs. He remembers one
moment three years ago
when he had to memorize and
sing many foreign lines. This
was when he starred in one of
the biggest productions of his
life — his bar mitzvah at Tem-
ple Israel.
"When I got up to sing my
prayers, I didn't realize how
loud and energetic I was,"
said Gurwin. He projected so
loudly, in fact, that Cantor
Harold Orbach walked up to
the bimah and switched off
the microphone.
In his- free time, Gurwin
likes to sleep. "Sometimes I
am in rehearsal for two or
three shows at a time, so my
leisure time is limited
especially during the school
year." Still, he manages to
maintain a 4.0 grade point
average. Gurwin explained
how he does it. "I study bet-
ween performing and sleep-
ing." 0
