Although he has appeared at the Fisher and Meadow Brook and is a member of the Peanut Butter Players, Gur- win still enjoys acting at the high school and performing with the Southfield-Lathrup High School Madrigal Singers. Danny is a very focused in- dividual," said Robert A. Mar- tin, music director at Southfield-Lathrup. "He works hard and is open to suggestions and new ideas. His personality and personal commitment are unques- tionably an asset to the music program at Lathrup; he's very dedicated?' Last year, Gurwin and the other members of the Southfield-Lathrup Madrigal Singers went to Ocean City, Md., and competed with 1,500 students in high school choirs and bands from all over the United States. Both Southfield-Lathrup and Gur- win received special recogni- tion at the event. Southfield- Lathrup received a ranking of one for best madrigal singers, best men's and women's ensemble and best barber- shop quartet. Gurwin took part in all three events. To top this off, Gurwin also received the award for Outstanding Male Soloist in the national competition. "I was speechless and couldn't move," said Gurwin. "To be recognized as the number one soloist in the na- tion was just mind boggling?' This year, he is competing in a classical opera competi- tion sponsored by Maccabees Mutual Life Insurance Co. Sixty students from Michigan high schools sent cassette tapes of themselves singing two classical opera songs, one in English and the other in a foreign language. And Gur- win, who sang "Where'er You Walk" and "Danza, Danza, Gentile Fanciulla" in Italian, was chosen to compete with 15 other students in the finals at Oakland University's Varner Hall. Gurwin's acting abilities have earned praise from John Swords, theater director at Southfield-Lathrup. "He's an outstanding young man, and he's as good as it gets when it comes to acting," noted Swords. "He is a real nice young man to work with and can play just about any role. His talent is boundless." Gurwin also speaks highly of his school's music and theater programs. "We are really lucky to have such a F a) Charlie Brown's best friend applies his make up. good vocal and theater department at Southfield- Lathrup," said Gurwin. "It is a really wonderful school at which to learn theater because the productions are so professionally stressed, and there is a lot of interest in the theater program." Gurwin was only a freshman when he starred as Eugene in Lathrup's produc- tion of Brighton Beach Memoirs.. As a sophomore, Gurwin once again received a leading role. He played Tony in Southfield-Lathrup's. musical, West Side Story. In March, Gurwin will star as Seymour in Lathrup's pro- duction of Little Shop of Hor- rors. "Seymour is a character With whom you have a great opportunity to grow," said Gurwin. "He starts off as a weak character and grows, so that by the end of the show, he becomes very strong. Little Shop of Horrors is a fun show to perform; our cast is just great." Gurwin has also found suc- cess on the school's forensic team competing in dramatic interpretation. As a freshman, he interpreted the character of Superman from Feiffer's People and took first place at each of the competi- tions in which he took part. Last year, he interpreted the character of Paul San Marco, a Puerto Rican homosexual dancer in A Chorus Line. Gurwin took this piece all the way to the state finals at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and finished second overall in the state. He is active in music and theater during his summer vacations. Gurwin attended Interlochen National Music Camp for musical theater and choir in 1986. The following summer, he performed in "150 Spirited Years," a ses- quicentennial salute to Michigan, with Phil Esser and Actors Alliance at the Michigan State Fair. This past summer, Gurwin "had the time and experience of my life." "I went to a theater camp in New York called Stagedoor Manor Performing Arts Training Center in the Cat- skills," said Gurwin. "I just had the most incredible time working with the profes- sionals there and made some of my best friends forever there?' When he was-in New York, Gurwin's theatrical talent was not overlooked. After cat- ching the eyes of many talent agents, he settled with talent manager Shirley Grant, who represents several young movie, Broadway and televi- sion stars including Keshia Knight Pulliam from The Cosby Show and Allison
