Jordan Gets
Tourism Query

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Israel has
sent "practical feelers" to Jor-
dan about opening a joint
border crossing for tourists
between Eilat and Aqaba,
Tourism Minister Gideon Patt
said last week.
Addressing an interna-
tional conference of travel
agents in the Israeli resort ci-
ty of Eilat on the Red Sea,
Patt noted that Jordan would
like to develop the resort
potential of neighboring
Aqaba.
He said he has invited Jor-
danian tourism officials to
meet with him at the Interna-
tional Tourist Fair.

Red Cross Hits
Plastic Bullets

Geneva (JTA) — The Inter-
national Committee of the
Red Cross says the use of
plastic bullets by Israeli
security forces causes "un-
necessary, indiscriminate suf-
fering" to the civilian popula-
tion in the Israeli-admini-
stered territories.
ICRC spokesman Carlos
Bauverd said last week said
that the humanitarian agen-
cy reached its conclusions on
the basis of the findings of Dr.
Ferenc Meyer, one of its
medical staff, who visited the
territories.
Bauverd acknowledged that
plastic bullets are intended to
avoid the casualties caused
when live ammunition is us-
ed to quell disturbances.
But the composition of the
plastic bullets varies with the
factories which make them.
They are made of different
percentages of several
materials, including plastic
and metal.
Even the Israeli authorities
admit this ammunition can
have severe effects at ranges
less than 70 yards, resulting
in instant death if a person is
hit in a vital area such as the
head or heart, Bauverd said.
But, at longer ranges, some
people are not even aware
they have been hit. "The
distance determines the ef-
fect," he said.
