Los Angeles — The growing
media savvy of Arab
organizations in the United
States was reflected in full
page advertisements placed
last week in major American
newspapers by the National
Association of Arab Ameri-
cans.
Under a boldface headline
"Who Is NOT complying with
the U.S. Position on the Mid-
dle East?", the ad purports to
compare the positions of the
United States, Israel and the
PLO on 12 issues.
Sample issues were "Land
for Peace," Security of States,
International Conference,
Confederation with Jordan,
and Israel in Violation of
Geneva Conventions," all of
which were marked "Yes" for
the U.S. and PLO, and "No"
for Israel.
On "Right of Israel to Ex-
ist," the ad's PLO joined the
United States and Israel in
the affirmative, and on the
use of terrorism, all three par-
ties were credited with a "no."
At the bottom of the tabu-
lation, the sponsors of the ad
concluded that "Israel agrees
with the United States on
three (issues). The PLO
agrees with the United States
on nine. . . Now, ask yourself,
who is not complying with

the U.S. positions on the Mid-
dle East?"
The ad appeared in seven
major dailies, including the
New York Times, Los Angeles
Times, Washington Post and
USA Today.
There appeared to be no im-
mediate response to the ad by
American Jewish organiza-
tions, with the exception of
the Jewish Federation Coun-
cil in Los Angeles.
In a press statement re-
leased the same day, Dr.
Steven Windmueller of the
federation's Community Rela-
tions Committee charged that
the ad was "blatantly false
. . . represented half truths,
falsified the positions of the
U.S. and Israeli govern-
ments," and certainly vio-
lated truth in advertising.
lb the ad's claim that Israel
did not accept United Nations
resolutions 242 and 338,
Windmueller responded that
in fact "the basis of Israel's
policy has been built on these
UN positions."
lb the assertion that _the
PLO opposed terrorism,
Windmueller said that this
claim "fails to accurately por-
tray the PLO record of ongo-
ing terrorism directed against
Israel, the United States and
other nations."

Shamir Is Concerned
About Sharansky Post

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Prime
Minister Yitzhak Shamir has
privately expressed reserva-
tions over the proposal to ap-
point Soviet Jewry activist
Natan Sharansky to be
Israel's ambassador to the
United Nations, informed
sources said last week.
While he admires the
former prisoner of conscience,
Shamir is concerned that
naming him to the highly
visible U.N. post might be
perceived in Moscow as a
needless provocation at a
time when Soviet-Israeli rela-
tions seem to be warming, the
sources said.
Shamir is said to regret its
premature disclosure to the
news media. It will be hard
now to back away from the ap-
pointment without causing
Sharansky some embarrass-
ment.
Officials here said Shamir
will try to have the proposal
quietly shelved. In doing so,
he is likely to have the
cooperation of his coalition
partner, Vice Premier
Shimon Peres, without whose
consent the appointment
could not be made.

Many members of Peres'
Labor Party have voiced
opposition to Sharansky as
head of Israel's U.N. delega-
tion. They have cited among
other things his hostility-
toward the Soviet system and
outspoken skepticism of
President Mikhail Gor-
bachev's liberal measures.
Shamir is said to prefer
Israel's ambassador to
France, Ovadia Sofaer, to be
its next U.N. ambassador.
_ Sofaer is a seasoned diplo-
mat. But he has been abroad
more than five years. Accord-
ing to foreign service regula-
tions, he must now be given
an appointment at home.

Bush Invites
Shamir To D.C.

Washington (JTA) — Presi-
dent Bush has invited Israeli
Prime Minister Yitzhak
Shamir to Washington, Is-
raeli Embassy spokesman
Yossi Gal said last week.
But White House and State
Department officials would
not confirm Bush's apparent
invitation.
