Other nursery school pro-
grams also offer extended
care for students with work-
ing parents. At the Beth
Hayeled Nursery School at
Congregation Shaarey Zedek,
children 2 and up can stay
from 7:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m.
each day but Friday, when
they must be picked up at
4:30 p.m. The full-day pro-
gram is offered only at the
synagogue, with early drop-
off available at the West
Bloomfield branch, explained
director Janet Pont. About 20
students use the program on
various days of the week.
"We set up the program
that is appropriate for each
child," Pont said. "Children
under 3 may be in a class-
room for half a day and in the
day care room for half a day.
Older children could be in two
classes, one morning and one
afternoori, sometimes with
the same teacher, sometimes
different.
"We offer enrichment
classes, like computers and
woodworking. If they get
tired, they can always rest in
the day care room. We have
folding mats, and the day care
room is staffed all day. We
don't push them, and they
manage very nicely."
Extended days are also
available for nursery school
students at Temple Emanu-
El, said Michaelyn Silver-
man, co-director. Children
from two-and-a-half through
kindergarten are enrolled for
the extra hours.
"Some come as early as
7:3G a.m. and stay - until 6
p.m.," she said. "We have a
napping room open from
12:30 to 2:30 p.m.'
The temple began its ex-
tended day program about
five years ago, with four or
five children the first year.
Now, more than 50 of the 200
students in the nursery
school are there for additional
hours, Silverman said.
"The nature of the Jewish
community is changing,"
Silverman said. "Most
mothers are working. It's a
180-degree turnaround from
when I started in Jewish
nursery education 10 years
ago. What we offer is a
heimish kind of situation.
When both parents work all
day, they need this care. They
need to know that their child
is safe, having a good time,
happy and loved." 111
Many synagogue nursery
school programs are consider-
ing or have begun offering
limited care for younger
children. Individual schools
should be contacted for their
offerings.
