board of the Jewish Frontier,
the Labor Zionist journal,
since its founding in 1934.
She was its editor in chief
from 1948 until the
mid-1970s.
Menahem Rosensaft, presi-
dent of the Labor Zionist
Alliance, called Syrkin "one
of the towering intellectual
influences not only of the
Labor Zionist movement but
of the Zionist movement as a
whole."
Syrkin taught in New York
City high schools from 1925
to 1948 and was an associate
professor of English at
Brandeis University from
1950 to 1966. She was a
member of the Jewish Agen-
cy Executive from 1965 to
1968.
Syrkin came to the United
States in 1907 and graduated
from Cornell University in
1920. Her late husband was
the noted poet, Charles Rez-
nikoff. She is survived by a
son, David Bodansky of Seat-
tle, Wash.; a sister, Zivia
Syrkin Wurtele of Santa
Monica; two grandchildren
and two great-grandchildren.
Red Cross
Book Blasted
Geneva (JTA) — An official
of the World Jewish Congress
has sharply criticized a Swiss
historian's assessment of the
International Red Cross's
lack of help in saving Jewish
victims of the Nazis.
Dr. Gerhard Riegner, the
WJCongress' "eyes and ears"
in Geneva during the years of
the Holocaust, accused Jean-
Claude Favez, a professor of
history at the University of
Geneva, of unwarranted len-
iency to the Red Cross in his
recent book, Mission Impossi-
ble.
"The position adopted by
the International Committee
of the Red Cross is indefensi-
ble. The organization adopted
the Nazi doctrine as a reali-
ty," Riegner charged in an in-
terview in La Gazette Juive, a
Jewish weekly published in
Basel.
In his book, Favez conclud-
ed that the humanitarian
agency had a great deal of in-
formation about the Nazi
persecution of Jews from its
delegates all over Europe.
But the agency believed it
had to act with extreme cau-
tion so as not to compromise
its work on behalf of prison-
ers of war and civilian
detainees.
Riegner said he could not
understand Favez's attitude,
in light of ICRC orders to "act
with prudence and discre-
tion" and their instructions
"do not handle the cases of
Jewish inmates."

CANDLE-LIGHTING CEREMONIES
For the Times of Your Life
Are you having a party that calls for a cake?
A Big Birthday, Bar Mitzvah, for your Sweet Sixteen's sake?
If you're lighting the candles to honor that day,
Let me put it in verse, and write it your way!
