U.S. Mediates
Taba Dispute
Jerusalem (JTA) — The
United States is trying to
defuse a potentially ugly
situation arising between
Egypt and Israel in their
dispute over Taba.
Abraham Sofaer, the U.S.
State Department's legal ad-
viser who has been serving as
a mediator, arrived in Cairo
last week with the latest
Israeli proposals.
His arrival follows two ver-
bal attacks on Israel by Egyp-
tian President Hosni
Mubarak over the Taba issue
in recent days.
Mubarak accused Israel of
reneging on its undertaking
to fix a date for withdrawal
from Taba, which was award-
ed to Egypt by international
arbitration last year.
Mubarak said the Israelis
were undermining Egypt's
confidence that they would
abide by their commitments.
The Israelis do not dispute
Egypt's sovereignty but.want
outstanding matters settled
before they leave, including
the sale price for the two
Israeli-built resorts, the Avia
Sonesta Hotel and Rafi Nel-
son Vacation Village.
Sofaer reportedly did not
bring a firm withdrawal date
to Cairo. He is conveying the
Inner Cabinet's promise to set
a date "very soon" after
agreements are reached on
the sale of the resorts and free
access of Israeli tourists to
Taba.
Mubarak said that Israelis
would receive no special
privileges and will be treated
like any other foreign tourists
arriving in Egypt.
35 Israelis
In FBI Probe
Aviv (JTA) — The FBI is
investigating 35 people in
Israel suspected of attacking
Arab activists and alleged
former Nazi war criminals in
the United States, according
to a report in Hadashot
recently.
Israeli police, assisted by in-
formants, are keeping the
suspects under surveillance,
the newspaper said.
Most of them are active in
Rabbi Meir Kahane's Kach
movement, and some live in
Kiryat Arba, the militant Or-
thodox township adjacent to
Hebron in the West Bank.
Hadashot said one of the
suspects is Yekutiel Ben-
Yaakov, a spokesman for the
new "state of Judea," which
Kahane said would be estab-
lished in any territories
evacuated by Israel.
