"smear campaign" against more traditional Orthodox Jews, claimed an article in a recent issue of The Jewish Observer, the national magazine of the Agudath Israel of America movement. In "The Media's Anti- Orthodox Campaign," author Mechachem Lubinsky traced: • The "venomous outpour- ing of vitriol from the media when it seemed that Israel's Likud Party was about to ce- ment an alliance with right- wing Orthodox parties; and, • Newspaper ads against the Orthodox position on the `Who Is A Jew' issue that spread "distortion, disinfor- mation, and hatred." Among the examples of anti-Orthodox sentiment voic- ed by the non-Orthodox, Lubinsky cited a quote from ex-Knesset member Abba Eban that appeared in the Jerusalem Post ("Classical Zionism . is now challeng- ed by superstition, in- tolerance . . ., xenophobia . . .") and another from Alex- ander Schindler, head of the Reform Union of American Hebrew Congregations that appeared in Newsday ("Those crazies have the balance of power in Israel.") "Don't Reform leaders," asked Lubinsky, "understand that when they paint all Or- thodox Jews as wild-eyed Traditions and Transitions In Ming Ceramics An Exhibition from the Idemitsu Museum of Arts, Tokyo February 5-March 26, 1989 Free admission.
