will certainly create a better
America," Lester said.
Several members of the au-
dience agreed. Cathy Gor-
witz, co-president of B'nai
B'rith Women in Lansing,
said that to better America,
Jewish leaders need to en-
courage Jews to help the poor.
"I think until Jews today
open up their eyes and realize
this, we're not going to see
much progress," she said.
The third speaker, Dr. Kurt
Gorwitz, consultant to the
Michigan Black Child In-
stitute in Lansing, said Jews
have failed to recognize the
reality of poverty because
they assumed the federal
government would end it.
"Merely pouring money at
it (poverty) didn't solve the
fundamental issues," Dr. Gor-
witz said. "Our energy and
resources must be devoted to
combating our primary
enemies — poverty and
deprivation?'
In addition to the panel
discussion, Hillel is working
with Dr. Richard Redden, a
faculty adviser to the Martin
Luther King Jr. commemora-
tion, to develop a relationship
with MSU's Black Caucus.
Most efforts to build a rela-
tionship between black and
Jewish students come from
administration groups, Hillel
Executive Director Dr. Mark
Finkelstein said. The
Religious Advisors Associa-
tion of MSU has formed a
campaign against bigotry.
