Continued on Page 76 To Our Peader8 When The Jewish News started a search for mitzvah heroes last September, the intent was to identify and honor those Jews in our midst who, through unusual and extraor- dinary acts of charity and kindness, touched the lives of Jews and non-Jews in the metropolitan Detroit area. Through the publication of a special section highlighting their good deeds, The Jewish News sought to inspire others to undertake similar commitments. From a series of announcements in The Jewish News, more than 70 nominations were received. An incredible array of mitzvah peo- ple who perform good deeds beyond the glare of the spotlight were brought to our attention. After hours of review and, in . many cases, solicitation of additional information about a nominee, four mitzvah heroes were selected: Louis Kay, Bassie Chase, Chuck Pearlstein and Fay Isackson. Those participating in the selection were Rabbi Daniel Polish of Temple Beth El, Rabbi Abraham Jacobovitz of Machon L'Torah, Susan Moiseev, judge of the 46th district court, Meyer King, previously recognized by the community for the mitz- vahs he performs, Arthur M. Horwitz, as- sociate publisher of The Jewish News and Elizabeth Kaplan, features editor of The Jewish News and coordinator of the project. It is the intent of The Jewish News to publish a mitzvah heroes special section annually. We hope you find this section inspiring and heart-warming and will share it with family and friends. Additional copies for classroom use or distribution by your club or service organization are available by contact- ing Ms. Kaplan at 354-6060. May the efforts of these mitzvah heroes give us strength. Arthur M. Horwitz Associate Publisher THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS 69
