THE JEWISH NEWS

alentine's Day isn't
until Feb. 14 . . . but
this romance dept.'s
Dan Cupid couldn't wait to
shoot an arrow of love.
About a year ago, when
Elizabeth Kaplan came to the
Jewish News from Kansas
City, fashion editor and
writer Carla Schwartz and
writer Kim Lifton, pooled
their think-cap resources for
a local matchmaking to-do.
Shortly after Carla profiled
Phil Applebaum in her Life-
styles feature, she suggested
Elizabeth meet Phil . . . Kim,
pretending to need informa-
tion for a story, called Phil
and said, "I have a friend who
is DYING to go out with you!"
Elizabeth, slightly peeved
with Kim, was a bit shocked
when Phil phoned he'r that
afternoon at the office . . . Liz
vehemently denied any part
of the scheme . . . and, lucki-
ly so, the two did meet each
other.
Phil and Elizabeth were
engaged on his recent birth-
day . . . just four months after
they met . . . Seems that all
along, Carla and Kim had
another partner . . . fate.
WHILE A struggling stu-
dent in Europe years back,
farthest thing from the minds
of Marshall and Dee Shapiro
was that he would one day
return to lecture on cosmetic
surgery . . . After becoming a
renowned plastic surgeon,
Marshall's attendance has
been clamored for the world
over . . . Feb. 7, 7:30 p.m., he
will give a slide presentation
in Plastic and Reconstructive
Surgery at his offices, 7001
Orchard Lake Rd. next to
Boardwalk . . . It'll be the
first time ever at his office .. .
with the informal and infor-
mative session for both
women and men . . . Mar-
shall's slide presentation on
"Cosmetic Surgery — A Per-
sonal Choice" will be followed
by a question and answer
session.
BELATED CONGRATS
... to Jane Kasapis . . . on her
birthday . . . to Randy Mar-
cuson . . . on his 32nd
birthday.
NITA AND JOE
Silberschein took the family
on a Caribbean cruise for
their aniversary . . . but after
returning, she didn't have
much time to show off her tan
. . . Day following, Nita slip-
ped on the ice in front of son
Dr. Glenn Silberschein's
house and broke her shoulder

in three places . . . Get well
wishes, Nita.
CONGRATS ... to Jerry
Cohen, one of the Caucus
Club owners . . . on his 52nd
birthday . . . Also to brother
Hiram Cohen . . . on his 38th
birthday.
MANEQUIN SHOW by
Leah Marks Productions will
be one of the features at 17th
Annual March of Dimes
Sweetheart Ball, Feb. 18,
Westin Hotel . . . cocktails
6:30 p.m., dinner-dance 7:30
. . . It'll honor Bill Bonds,
WXYZ-TV anchorperson; for-
mer appeals judge Vincent J.
Brennen, Dr. Ralph Cash,
Childrens Hospital pediatri-
cian; and Marc Stepp, vice
prez, U.A.W. International .. .
10 Leah Marks manequins
will wear John Darakjian
jewelry and The Broadway
menswear while a mime also
entertains the black tie op-
tional throng.
Leah's next presentation
will be March 9 when 1,000
people are expected to cram
Hellenic Cultural Center in
Westland for the black tie op-
tional Beach Bound Limited
affair by Ladies Auxiliary, St.
Constantina and Helen .. .
George Golematis of former
Giorgio's note, will cater the
biggie event . . . with John
Darakjian Jewelry, Chudik's
Furs, The Broadway mens-
wear and Sally's Designs.
"AFTER 50 YEARS in the
Thrift Shop business, we
pride outselves on service
both to our longtime donors
and faithful cutomers," writes
Barbara Grant, president of
National Council of Jewish
Women.
NEXT MEETING of
Greater Midwest Detroit
Club of Florida is Feb. 8 .. .
For more info, call Sid Levy,
v.p., at 417-483-3161 . . . (2038
Exeter C, Boca Raton, Fla.
33434).
ERRATA ... Bob Benson
is married to Doreen, not
Caroline . . . whoever she is.
DR. NORMAN BOLTON,
son of Esther and Ben "B.B."
Bolton, was recently elected
as chairman of State of
Michigan Medical Licensing
Board.
GET WELL Wishes . . . to
Rose Guttman, former owner
with husband of Irving's Deli
at La Mirage mall on North-
western . . . recuperating at
home after recent auto
accident.
NORMA ZAGER, local
comedienne, will be in the
Catch A Rising Star room at
Bally's in Las Vegas, Feb. 28
thru March 6.
