Storyteller

Storyteller Syd Lieberman
will open the second semester
of the United Hebrew Schools
Community High School on
Sunday.
Lieberman has appeared
extensively in the Chicago
area and has performed in a
variety of settings. In addi-
tion he has appeared on
Beyond the Magic Door on
CBS and on WBEZ public
radio and at the Jewish
Festival of the Arts.
He has taught English in
the suburbs of Chicago as
well as in West Africa during
a stint in the Peace Corps. In
addition, he is a published
writer. His repertoire con-
tains stories for both adults
and children.
The program will be held in
the LaMed Auditorium of the
United Hebrew Schools,
21550 W. 12 Mile, Southfield.
Refreshments will be served
at 9:30 a.m. and the program
will begin at 10 a.m.
Many new courses will be
conducted during the second
semester including "A World
of Difference!' Other special
courses include "History of
American Jewry," "Jewish
Ethics," "Anti-Semitism lb-
day," "Congregational Skills,"
special parent education pro-
grams and weekly services for
those who wish to practice
their congregational skills.
In addition parents and
students will have the oppor-
tunity to enroll in the Fami-
ly Living Room program.

`Shlock Rock'
Holds Concert

Shlock Rock will appear in
concert at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at
Congregation Shaarey Zedek,
sponsored by the Hillel Day
School P.T.O.

Shlock Rock takes popular
rock and roll tunes
(1950-present) and refur-
bishes the lyrics with words
that deliver a message or
feature a Jewish theme.
Specific examples of the
"Shlock" format include
"Under the Chupah" ("Under
the Boardwalk"), "Born in
the USA — And Making
Aliyah lbday," "Love that Old
Time Torah Scroll" ("Old
Time Rock and Roll") — as
well as various "rap" and
original rock tunes.
