Lester Talk
At The Center
Julius Lester will appear at
the Maple/Drake Jewish
Community Center on Thurs-
day at 7:30 p.m. as part of the
"Let Us Entertain You"
series which is funded in part
by the Michigan Council for
the Arts and The Manny and
Natalie Charach EndoWment
Fund.
Lester has published 15
books: eight of fiction, six of
non-fiction and one volume of
poetry. Among the awards
these books have received are
the Newberry Honor Medal,
The Lewis Library Associa-
tion Notable Book and the
New York Times Outstanding
Book. His books have been
translated into seven
languages.
He has published more
than one hundred essays and
reviews, has recorded two
albums of original songs,
hosted and produced a radio
show on WBAI-FM in New
York City for eight years, and
hosted a live television show
on WNET in New York for
two years.
A veteran of the Civil
Rights Movement, his
photographs of that move-
ment were included in an ex-
hibition at the Smithsonian
Institution and are part of the
permanent photographic col-
lection at Howard University.
His most recent book is
Lovesong• Becoming a Jew, an
autobiographical account of
his conversion to Judaism.
Lester will speak on
"Becoming a Jew" and
"Black-Jewish Relations."

Young Couples
Group Forms
A Jewish social group for
young couples, sponsored by
the Young Israel Council of
Metropolitan Detroit has
been formed.
The purpose of the group is
to provide a framework in
which young couples can
meet, socialize, and have fun,
within a Jewish communal
atmosphere.
The group's kick-off event is
an "Evening at the Farm,"
Feb. 11 at Sugarbush Farms.
Activities will include hay
rides, sleigh rides, toboggan-
ning, ice skating and
refreshments. The fee is
payable in advance.
