Caterers say that second weddings are smaller, more intimate and more "romantic" than formal first- timers. For instance, a family-oriented first wedding will have about 200 guests in attendance rather than 50 to 75 people, which is the more usual number invited to a second wedding. First-time weddings generally begin early on a Saturday evening and last well into the wee hours. There is the classic buffet, the sit-down dinner, and open bar, the full-piece band for dancing and finally, the cake-cutting ceremony. The older bride and groom opt for late afternoon cocktail parties and put far less emphasis on the quantity of food, offering instead hors d'oeuvres that are passed, possibly followed by a dinner and dessert buffet. Rather than a spirit-laden bar, they will serve fashionble champagne cocktails like Mimosas (champagne, orange juice and a dash of orange liqueur), white wine or plain bubbly. If live music is part of the party, it is more likely to be a small combo or piano player, rather than a band playing sentimental favorites. One common problem in second marriages arises when it's the first marriage for either the new bride or groom and he or she feels "cheated" by not having the gown, the cast of thousands and the garter-throwing ceremony. One young woman had a big first wedding at 20, divorced a year later and went through the whole shindig again at 23 when her new fiance's family insisted that their son not be given short shrift. About her "never a bridesmaid, always a bride" predicament, she sighs, "I felt foolish at my first wedding, and walked through the second one just to please Gary's parents.
