Modern Manners, stresses that after the

first one, weddings should be tastefully
underdone. She recalls one that
wasn't.
"It was the most lavish wedding,
held in St. Patrick's Cathedral. The
bride wore a long white dress with a
seven-foot train, white tie and tails for
the men, and long dresses for the
women. There was caviar and
champagne and an elaborate dinner at
a private club in New York. No
expense was spared.
"It doesn't have to be that way.
The reason I cite this is because it was
a second wedding for one and the
third wedding for the other. It's not
necessary. You can do things with a
lot of taste and class on a much
simpler basis."
Like her third wedding to Edward
R. Downe Jr. She describes it as the
simplest wedding she's ever been to.
"It was a dinner party at my house
in Southampton for 60 people. We
had a steel band. Dinner was soup,
veal, vegetables and salad, and a plain
two-tiered cake," Ford says.
The simpler the wedding, the
better, agrees Jeff Zaslow. "It's so
much easier to have a wedding in the
backyard with little hot dogs and a
happy bride and groom. Smart brides
and grooms give weddings
commensurate with their incomes." ❑
