Niev's bar mitzvah is twinned with Felix Avshalom of Baku, in the Soviet Republic of Azherbeijhan. Niev is a student at the Hillel Day School and regularly attends services at Congregation B'nai David. Ekaterina is the daughter of Leonid and Rita Burdo. Burdo applied for an exit visa in June 1979 and was refus- ed December 1979. A geologist, Burdo was not allowed to emigrate because Soviets charge he had access to state secrets. Burdo's parents immigrated in 1972 to Israel. When his father died in 1981, Burdo asked Soviet authorities to let him attend the funeral. He was refused: Amy has written letters to the Burdo family in Moscow and to Leonid's mother in Israel, but has not received a response.
